Today, on the 11th of February, the world is celebrating the ‘International Day of Women and Girls in Science’. 2025 marks the 10th anniversary of this day, which highlight on a global scale the persistence of significant gender gaps at all levels of in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines all over the world. Even though women have made tremendous progress towards increasing their participation in higher education, they are still under-represented in these fields.
According to UIS data, less than 30% of the world’s scientists are women. Furthermore, numerous studies have found that women in STEM fields publish less, are paid less for their research and do not progress as far as men in their careers.
In the polar research community the percentage of women, especially at higher career levels, continues to trail that of men.
We, from the SCAR Action Group on Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) aim to ‘transform’ this day into a year on by featuring one woman in science on the SCAR social media channels on the 11th of every month. These features will highlight the different paths and possibilities for female researchers to achieve success (and happiness!), while also encouraging more young women and girls to follow in their footsteps.
We are looking forward to this exciting initiative and hope that many of you will share our posts to increase awareness as much as possible.
Check out the SCAR Social Media Channels Facebook and BlueSky for the first featured Woman!!!
