The Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) is the instrument of the Antarctic Treaty System which is responsible for conserving marine life in the waters around Antarctica. Established in 1982, CCAMLR and its Scientific Committee (SC-CAMLR) convene annually to make decisions towards managing Southern Ocean marine living resources.
The Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) is an invited Observer to annual meetings of SC-CAMLR and CCAMLR and provides independent and objective scientific advice in a variety of fields, especially on environmental and conservation issues, including those related to climate change.
SCAR’s Standing Committee on the Antarctic Treaty System (SC-ATS) is responsible for coordinating the information presented by SCAR to CCAMLR. This is mainly done through the submission and presentation of papers at the meetings. These papers are coordinated by SC-ATS and involve many scientists from around the world helping to convey the most up-to-date research.
