SCAR XXIX IP19: Plans for an Antarctic Climate Assessment – Trends and Impacts

The Plan

Following the production of the Arctic Climate Impact Assessment early in 2005, the SCAR Executive Committee agreed at its meeting in Sofia (July 11-13, 2005) that a comparable and complementary assessment of the Antarctic should be produced for the guidance of policy makers in the Antarctic Treaty System and to inform the public. SCAR’s Executive Director and the Chief Officers of SCAR’s Standing Scientific Group on Physical Sciences and of SCAR’s Standing Committee on the Antarctic Treaty System were charged with developing an appropriate document, for presentation in due course to the Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting. It was agreed that the bulk of the work would take place through SCAR’s Scientific Research Programme on Antarctica in the Global Climate System (AGCS), led by Dr. John Turner of the British Antarctic Survey. The final draft of the report will be sent out for peer review prior to publication in the refereed scientific literature.

This plan is brought to the attention of the XXIX ATCM in the expectation that some Parties may wish to contribute to the Assessment in one way or another, and to stimulate debate about the possible direction that such an Assessment may take. We intend to form an international scientific steering committee, and would welcome suggestions for scientific participation in that committee.

SCAR XXIX WP12: Electoral Procedure

Overview

SCAR Delegates must elect a new President and 3 Vice-Presidents during the XXIX SCAR Meeting in Hobart, Tasmania, 2006. The office of President falls vacant at the end of the meeting. Delegates will elect a new President for the period 2006-2010 to replace J. Thiede, who, as Past-President, will remain a member of the SCAR Executive Committee for a term of 2 years.

The Offices of three Vice-Presidents fall vacant at the end of the meeting One Vice- President (H. Shimamura, Japan) resigned during the year, and, following consultation with Members, Z. Zhang of China was elected to replace him until the end of the Delegates meeting, in order to strengthen Asian involvement in SCAR activities. In addition, two of the current Vice-Presidents (C. Howard Williams, New Zealand, and J. Lopez-Martinez, Spain) will have completed their 4-year terms of Office. Delegates will elect three new Vice Presidents for the period 2006 – 2010.

The Geoscience Standing Scientific Group of SCAR covers activities that range from geological and geophysical scientific research to spatial data standards and data base management.

This document presents a summary of activities carried out by the SCAR Standing Scientific Group on Geoscience (SSG-GS) since SCAR XXVIII in Bremen, July 2004, and a report of the SSG-GS business meeting – Hobart – 8th-11th July 2006.

A summary report will presented to the meeting of the SCAR Executive Committee (July 14th) and to the SCAR Delegates (July 17th).
Expanded reports on the work of the various sub-groups will be available from the SCAR web site (http://www.geoscienc.scar.org). The web site also contains national and other reports on science that comes under the SSG-GS.
