Each organisation contributes to supporting early career persons under similar schemes and all four organisations work together to advertise, promote and administer the collection of available opportunities. This paper presents a summary to date of all the schemes and encourages all Parties to bring these opportunities to the attention of their early career persons. The organisations note with thanks that the schemes have only been possible due to continuing support from Parties, national Antarctic programme members, SCAR organisations and the IAATO membership. On the basis of the report, the ATCPs convened a Meeting of Experts on Climate Change. In turn, that meeting resulted in the establishment of a Climate Change Response Work Programme within the CEP, and more recently a Subsidiary Group on Climate Change Response with the mandate to give effect to the priorities identified within the Work Programme. SCAR published a further update to the ACCE Report in 2014 (Turner et al. 2014), and has produced annual synopses of research outcomes for the ATCMs since 2009. A major update by SCAR to the ACCE report (Chown et al., 2022) entitled Antarctic Climate Change and the Environment: A Decadal Synopsis and Recommendations for Action has now been compiled based largely on the findings of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s Sixth Assessment Reports (IPCC AR6). A summary of the key findings of the update report and a series of policy recommendations derived from these findings is provided in ATCM XLIV Working Paper 30. Recommendations on research imperatives are provided in ATCM XLIV Working Paper 31. This Information Paper provides the ACCE update report as attachment ATT111. Ant-TAG provides an umbrella under which SCAR researchers and practitioners can make new connections, become aware of other existing projects, and pool existing expertise to provide guidance on important and relevant issues related to Antarctic tourism. Input from interested researchers of all disciplines is welcomed. Planned outputs are aimed at strengthening connections between academics, policy-makers, industry, and the public, enabling the group to make accurate and up-to-date recommendations relating to the practice of tourism in the region. Ultimately, the newly-formed Ant-TAG will strengthen SCAR’s capacity to provide timely guidance and input to the CEP and ATCM on Antarctic tourism matters. Research that will contribute to addressing most of these needs is being undertaken across a broad range of SCAR’s physical, biological and humanities/social science groups. SCAR provides independent and objective scientific advice to the CEP and will continue to provide information on climate change in response to specific requests or needs, as well as highlighting other relevant research. Maintaining effective communication between the CEP and SCAR on science needs and objectives will help to ensure that relevant research outputs continue to be made available in support of the CEP’s work on climate change. SCAR affiliated research relevant to the climate change related science needs identified in the CEP work plans, programmes, report and manuals is in attachment ATT112. To achieve this ambitious goal, this initiative aims to gather ocean stakeholders worldwide behind a common framework that will ensure ocean science can fully support countries in creating improved conditions for sustainable development of the world’s oceans. The initiative strives to strengthen the international cooperation needed to develop the scientific research and innovative technologies that can connect ocean science with the needs of society at the global scale. In January 2020 SCAR took over the management of the Portal, including the operation of the website that has been designed to provide easy access to the Information Summaries. This Working Paper provides an update on the operation of the Portal, and includes examples of how Information Summaries published in the Portal link directly to issues of priority interest for the CEP. SCAR recommends that the CEP continue to support the Portal, and identifies any additional Information Summaries it would like to see prepared. The Antarctic Environments Portal Content Management Plan is in attachment ATT049. The United Kingdom, Australia, Belgium, Finland, France, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, the United States, SCAR and ASOC recommend that, consistent with Resolution 8 (2021), the ATCM encourages Parties to: Support research on the actual and potential implications of climate change (including the global threats arising from potential thresholds and tipping points on the Antarctic ice shelf); Continue to support SCAR in the communication of the latest research and information on climate change and its impacts, through its regular and valued updates to the ATCM, including the Antarctic Climate Change and the Environment (ACCE) report; and Support the work of the CEP to consider the environmental implications of climate change through the Climate Change Response Work Programme, and continue to report on efforts to understand and address other implications for the management of Antarctica. This Working Paper provides an infographic summary of key findings from this ACCE Decadal Synopsis, and a series of policy recommendations derived from these findings. The Antarctic Treaty includes the nations and organisations best placed to be the voice of the state of the environment of the southern polar regions. The messages, informed by research in the Antarctic are clear. It is urgent that states meet, and exceed, the greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets of the Paris Climate Agreement to maintain the Antarctic and Southern Ocean in a state close to that known for the past 200 years. See working paper WP031 for Research Imperatives. The full ACCE update, “Antarctic Climate Change and the Environment – A Decadal Synopsis and Recommendations for Action“, is provided as attachment ATT111 to information paper IP072. Given the wide scope of Antarctic research, but the climate-change focus of this updated report, here we make recommendations for the most significant and urgent research required for the region. The recommendations focus on changes in the region that have significant implications for the Earth System and for society, and on the expected impacts of climate change on the region’s biodiversity. See working paper WP030 for Findings and Policy Recommendations.
