WP037: Projections of future population decline emphasise the need to designate the emperor penguin as an Antarctic Specially Protected Species

Submitted: 29 April 2021

Summary:

At the request of the UK, SCAR has initiated a review of the status of the emperor penguin, with the intention of considering it as an Antarctic Specially Protected Species. SCAR tasked the Expert Group on Birds and Marine Mammals (EG-BAMM) to undertake the review. SCAR finds that the emperor penguin is vulnerable to ongoing and projected climate change, warranting protection as an Antarctic Specially Protected Species. The outcomes of this assessment have relevance to the ATCM and CEP because of its implications for species-related conservation decision-making and conservation planning.

WP063: COVID 19 and Antarctica

Joint paper with New Zealand, Argentina, Australia, Chile, Norway and the UK

Submitted: 30 April 2021

Summary:

The 2021 Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting will be held virtually due to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, one of the most devastating pandemics in history. New Zealand, Argentina, Australia, Chile, Norway, the United Kingdom and SCAR consider that a Resolution to mark this extraordinary circumstance would be appropriate. A draft Resolution is attached for Parties’ consideration. It aims to record the implications of the pandemic for our work, and commit to continuing the important cooperation, fundamental to the Antarctic Treaty System, to manage risks to people in Antarctica and to Antarctic wildlife.
