2025 INSTANT Fellows Announced

The SCAR INSTANT Scientific Research Programme (Instability and Thresholds in Antarctica) is excited to announce the recipients of the 2025 INSTANT Fellowships. These fellowships support early career researchers working on topics related to Antarctic Ice Sheet stability, with a particular emphasis on increasing engagement from regions currently under-represented in INSTANT activities.

Following a competitive selection process, five fellows have been awarded funding to pursue research projects that align with the programme’s scientific priorities and contribute to the broader goals of INSTANT. Each fellowship provides up to USD $7,500 to support research visits, fieldwork, synthesis activities, science communication, and policy engagement.

The 2025 INSTANT Fellows are:

  • Giselle Lujan Marincovich (Argentina)
Aerosols – a Neglected Piece of Atmospheric Forcing over Ice and Snow

  • Camila Marin-Arias (Chile)
A hidden feedback promoting ice-sheet shrinkage: methane release into Antarctic coastal waters by retreating glaciers

  • Devsamridhi Arora (India)
Integrating sub-ice geological heterogeneity into Geothermal Heat Flow: A Case Study of Princess Elizabeth Land sector, East Antarctica

  • Yikai Zhu (China)
Temporal evolution and stability of Antarctic ice shelf pinning points: A decadal analysis from 2015 to 2024

  • Alexander Bradley (United Kingdom)
Investigating noise-induced tipping as a driver of Antarctic Ice Sheet retreat

Congratulations to the recipients!
The INSTANT Fellowships aim to build capacity in the next generation of Antarctic researchers, foster new international collaborations, and strengthen scientific contributions from across the global community. This round reflects INSTANT’s ongoing commitment to supporting early career researchers, particularly those based in South America, Asia, and Africa.
