Managing cumulative impacts and protected areas in Antarctica: what can we learn from the rest of the world? (A.Soutullo, A. – L. Machado-Gaye, & E. Juri) in Polar Research.
In this brief but thoughtful perspectives piece Soutullo and colleagues look outside of Antarctica to see what lessons from Protected Area management elsewhere in the globe can be used to inform management of cumulative impacts in Antarctica. They identify several key concepts to consider utilising in the Antarctic, including adaptive management and empowering protected area managers. Read the full piece at Polar Research here.

Antimicrobial resistance in Antarctica: is it still a pristine environment? (K. Hwengwere, H. Paramel Nair, K.A. Hughes, L.S. Peck, M.S. Clark, & C.A. Walker) in Microbiome.
In this piece Hwengwere and colleagues review the literature to search for evidence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in Antarctica, where the spread of AMR around the world is of growing concern. The research team found clear evidence for greater concentrations of AMR around research stations, though very low levels within seals and birds (albeit with limited sampling).
