SCAR at COP28, 30 Nov-12 December 2023

cop28The COP 28 UN Climate Change Conference is taking place at the Expo City, Dubai, UAE, from 30 November until 12 December 2023. The summit aims to bring countries together to implement commitments made under the Paris Agreement and take collective action against climate change.

SCAR is organising a range of events and Antarctic researchers will be presenting at different pavilions and meetings. A full overview of events that SCAR is involved in can be found below.
All times are given in Gulf Standard Time GST (UTC+4).

UNFCCC Side Event

Sunday, 10th December, 11:30 -13:00, Room: SE Room 6

Adaptation with Loss and Damage: Facing Sea-level Rise and Mountain Freshwater Losses Above 1.5°C

When the costs of multi-generational loss and damage from cryospheric collapse are considered, a firm 1.5°C temperature limit is the inevitable conclusion. This side event explores pathways that will keep us within this non-negotiable Earth system limit, while building resilience and adaptation.

Speakers: IPCC AR6, SCAR and ICIMOD scientists, and Parties (Chile, Iceland, Liberia, Nepal, Vanuatu) from the Ambition on Melting Ice high-level group

The International Cryosphere Climate Initiative (ICCI) is once again coordinating a Cryosphere Pavilion at COP28!  The Pavilion will provide space for exhibits, science-policy seminars or “side events,” and ministerial-level events, especially in conjunction with the Ambition on Melting Ice High-level Group. At COP28, the team plans a series of shorter and dynamic events that, for the first time, may also be largely virtual and incorporate live reports from around the COP.

SCAR Events at the Cryosphere Pavilion

Friday, 8th December

11:30 Antarctic and Southern Ocean Ecosystems Under Severe Threat from Climate Change
Antarctic and Southern Ocean ecosystems are under severe threat from climate change impacts, such as sea ice loss, increasing temperatures and ocean acidification. This side event will give an overview of Southern Ocean ecosystems, their global importance, and the role of sea ice in supporting their productivity and function. We will then explore recent dramatic changes in Antarctic sea ice, ocean temperature and ongoing acidification, their impacts on these globally important ecosystems, and the action required to manage and safeguard against them.
Contacts: The Southern Ocean Observing System (SOOS), the Marine Ecosystem Assessment for the Southern Ocean (MEASO), the Integrating Climate and Ecosystem Dynamics in the Southern Ocean (ICED) program, the SCAR Expert Groups on Biogeochemical Exchange Processes at Sea-Ice Interfaces (BEPSII) and Antarctic Sea Ice Processes and Climate (ASPeCt).

Additionally, Antarctic researchers will be presenting at the following events:

Role of Open Science in Fostering Collaborative Solutions for a Resilient Future

Saturday 9th December, 2:00 PM, Malaysia Pavilion
Livestream

A discussion exploring how various disciplines and stakeholders are navigating new frontiers of open science in the context of the climate crisis
