New Antarctic Environments Portal publication on emperor penguins in a changing world

The life cycle of emperor penguins is intricately linked to sea ice conditions and drastic declines in sea ice extent threaten their population dynamics.

The Antarctic Environments Portal has today published a new Information Summary in time for 2024 World Penguin Day ‘Emperor penguins in a changing world: unveiling current trends and predicting future scenarios’.

The emperor penguin stands as a remarkable example of adaptation to the extreme conditions of Antarctic ice. However, advanced modeling predicts the extinction of the species by the end of the century under a high emissions scenario, driven by reductions in sea-ice habitat caused by climate change.

This Information Summary explores the life cycle and population dynamics of emperor penguins under present conditions and future climate change scenarios.

Authors: Stephanie Jenouvrier, Cassandra Brooks, Alice DuVivier, and Philip Trathan.

 About the Antarctic Environments Portal

The Antarctic Environments Portal (www.environments.aq) links Antarctic science and Antarctic policy, by providing easy access to information on a range of scientific issues relevant to Antarctic environmental governance and management.

The Portal supports the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) in its role of providing independent and objective scientific advice to the decision making bodies of the Antarctic Treaty system. All scientific information available through the Portal is prepared by Antarctic experts and goes through a rigorous editorial process before publication.
