The World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) Climate and Cryosphere (CliC) project has released its latest newsletter, available here.
Highlights include the 2016 CliC Annual Report, the meeting report from the 13th session of CliC’s Scientific Steering Group and the 2017-2022 CliC Action Plan.
The publication of the 2016 WCRP-CliC Annual Report
The report gives an overview of CliC activities in 2016 and includes contributions from all of the CliC Projects/Groups Leads. It summarizes the accomplishments and activities from 2016 including:
Results from the WCRP Grand Challenge on “Melting Ice and Global Consequences”
Supporting the WCRP Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6)
New initiatives on Biogeochemical Exchange Processes at Sea Ice Interfaces (BEPSII – co-sponsored by SCAR) and the Surface Ocean – Lower Atmosphere Study (SOLAS) and the
Launch of the Arctic Freshwater Synthesis (AFW)
The 13th Science Steering group meeting report
The CliC Scientific Steering Group met for its 13th session on February 17-18, 2017. The meeting discussed past progress as well as future plans. It was hosted at the Victoria University of Wellington (VUW), and was cosponsored by WCRP, CliC, the Norwegian Polar Institute (NPI), and VUW. The CliC SSG-13 took place in conjunction with the IGS/IACS/CliC International Symposium on the Cryosphere in a Changing Climate held at VUW from February 13-17, 2017.
Twenty-seven participants from thirteen different countries attended the meeting (twenty-five in person; two remotely). The meeting was chaired by CliC Co-Chairs Gerhard Krinner and James Renwick.
The publication of the 2017-2021 WCRP CliC Project Action Plan
The Plan lays out CliC science and organization for the period 2017-2021. The document briefly describes the overarching research needs and themes that guide CliC activities, the structure of CliC and its main activities over the coming years. It builds upon earlier documents such as the CliC Science and Coordination Plan, published in 2001, when the Arctic Climate System Study (1994-2003), a WCRP regional climate project, was extended globally.
