The Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research is pleased to announce the 2023 SCAR Fellowship recipients. For this round we will be awarding five Fellowships in total. SCAR would like to thank the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation for their continued support. In 2023, as in 2022, additional funding is being provided by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation through the Polar Initiative.
Congratulations to the 2023 SCAR Fellows!
The annual Antarctic Fellowships, awarded by the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR), the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO) and the Council of Managers of National Antarctic Programs (COMNAP) are an investment in the professional development of talented early career researchers.
The recipients of this year’s Antarctic Fellowships have been announced during International Week of Science and Peace (6-12 November), a week that encourages academic exchanges on a subject of universal importance while also generating greater awareness of the relationship of science and peace among the public.
The SCAR Fellowship Programme is designed to encourage the active involvement of early-career researchers in furthering our understanding of Antarctica. This year, a total of 33 applications were received for the SCAR early-career Fellowships, which offer awards of up to US$15,000 each.
The details for each of this year’s Fellows are listed below:
Laiza Cabral de Faria from the University of São Paulo, Brazil, who will visit the St. Francis Xavier University, Canada, for her project entitled –
Using Time-Series Metagenomic Sequencing to Infer Microbial Biogeochemical Cycling in Coastal Ecosystems of the Northern Antarctic Peninsula.
Alice Oates from Scott Polar Research Institute, UK, who will visit the Universidade Lusofona, Centro Universitario de Lisboa, Portugal, for her project entitled –
Setting an agenda for disability-focused research in Antarctic Social Sciences and Humanities.
Thomas Holmes from the University of Tasmania, Australia, who will visit the University of Washington, USA, for his project entitled –
Untangling ligand controls on iron cycling in the Southern Ocean using metabolomics.
Liliana Margonari from Instituto Antartico Argentino, Argentina, who will visit the University of Colorado Boulder, USA, for her project entitled –
Outlet Glacier Monitoring in the Larsen B Embayment, Eastern Antarctic Peninsula.
2023 Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation Fellowship
Dieter Tetzner from British Antarctic Survey, UK, who will visit the UROCOLD Lab, DISAT, University Milano-Bicocca, Italy, for his project entitled –
Reconstructing past changes in the Southern Hemisphere Westerly Winds during the Last Glacial-Interglacial Transition (LGIT).
Since launching the scientific fellowships to early career scientists in 2003, 84 SCAR Fellowships have been awarded.
Applications for the 2024 SCAR Fellowships will open next year.

SCAR has been working for many years with the Council of Managers of National Antarctic Programs (COMNAP), the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) and the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO) to support talented early-career researchers.
IAATO’s 2023 Fellowship awards have gone to Leena Riekkola from University of Auckland, New Zealand, and Miguel Ángel Bascur from University of Barcelona, Spain.
COMNAP made its announcement on 25 October, awarding its Antarctic Fellowship 2023 to Rafael Gonzalez-Serrano, a postdoctoral researcher at the Centro de Biología Molecular Severo Ochoa (CBMSO) in Madrid, Spain.
