SCAR Action Group RINGS will organize a 4-day workshop in beautiful Arctic Norway 27-30 June. The workshop was originally planned in March but postponed. New registration is required even if you registered for the March workshop.
The primary goal of this workshop is to generate synergies and international cooperation to develop more accurate and complete reference bed topography data for robust assessments of ice discharge from all around Antarctica. The secondary goal is to discuss relevant science plans for the ice sheet’s marginal zone. To achieve these goals, we aim to have diverse, multidisciplinary participants including (but not limited to) specialists in geophysics, geology, glaciology, oceanography, satellite observations, and modeling of the ice, ocean and atmosphere.
Throughout the workshop and associated pre/post online sessions, we will quantify the existing knowledge gaps and develop community protocols to systematically fill them. We also aim to implement research priorities as preliminary survey plans so that the necessary data can be acquired in a more complete way in the near future. The Action Group will prepare an article to summarize the outcome of this workshop in 2022 and submit for peer-review as the final deliverable of the Action Group which will end in March 2023.
We welcome both Action Group members and non-members from multiple disciplines related to RINGS. We uphold SCAR’s values of diversity and inclusion and strongly encourage early career researchers to attend the workshop. All participants are expected to actively take part in the discussion throughout the workshop, and are required to attend the workshop for the entire period.
The workshop is hosted by the Norwegian Polar Institute (NPI) at Malangen Resort near Tromsø with financial support from British Antarctic Survey, Technical University of Denmark, SCAR, SCAR’s Physical Science Group, SCAR’s Scientific Research Programme INSTANT, the Research Council of Norway, and NPI. The venue is blocked for maximum 50 participants and we invite all interested individuals to register. The full registration fee is 7000 Norwegian Kroner (approximately 700 Euro) including all lodging/food during the workshop and transportation between Tromsø and the venue. Please indicate in the registration form if financial assistance is needed to partly cover your registration fee. We will offer travel support to Tromsø as well mainly for early career researchers and those from countries with developing Antarctic programs. A tentative program is available here.
For those who are unable to travel to the workshop, we will broadcast talks and some sessions are open for online participants to interact with the speaker and onsite participants. However, discussion and discussion reporting sessions are open only to the onsite participants. Discussion outcomes will be presented at a follow-up digital meeting associated with SCAR Open Science Conference early August. Online participants are also invited to present poster at the conference. All online and onsite poster contributions will be presented digitally at the follow-up meeting too.
- Participation registration for in-person attendance (open until 10 April)
- Participation registration for virtual attendance (open until 25 June) If you present a poster, please register your online participation by 1 June.
- Hotel reservation on 26th -27th June, before the workshop
- Hotel reservation on 30th June – 1 July, after the workshop
