The Antarctic Environments Portal invites volunteers to help translate its Information Summaries into the Antarctic Treaty languages.
The Antarctic Environments Portal provides a web-based source of independent and up-to-date scientific information to support the work of decision makers in the Antarctic Treaty System (ATS). The Portal delivers reliable, policy-relevant Information Summaries on priority issues for Antarctic conservation and management.
The Portal is looking for volunteers with excellent written French, Russian and Spanish to join a translation group, to help us to ensure that the Information Summaries published on the Portal are accessible in all four Treaty languages.
What the role involves
The Portal currently publishes between 5-10 new or updated Information Summaries per year. New Information Summaries are originally created in English. Once a new Information Summary is finalised between the Editor and authors, the Assistant Editor will contact translation volunteers to provide an AI-translated version of the Information Summary to use as a basis for editing, comparing it to the original article to ensure the meaning hasn’t been altered. Translators will use this to produce a final translation ready for publication.
Time commitment
The time commitment will depend on the number of Information Summaries produced throughout the year, however with support from the Assistant Editor and AI-translation tools, we expect that this should take no longer than 2 hours per Information Summary. This is a volunteer position so there is no set term however for consistency we would ideally like volunteers to join for a minimum one-year period.
