SCAR Announces 2024 Visiting Scholars

SCAR is delighted to announce the recipients of the 2024 Visiting Scholarships: Dr Andrii Fedchuk (Ukraine), Dr Laura Perez (Uruguay), and Dr Stephen Jennings (Poland).

Dr Andrii Fedchuk will visit the British Antarctic Survey (UK). His project, “Capacity Building in Development of Multi-Site Environmental Management in Antarctica,” aims to strengthen Ukraine’s Antarctic research programme by collaborating with BAS to develop multi-site protected areas near Vernadsky station, addressing conservation challenges and advancing SCAR and Antarctic Treaty objectives.

Dr Laura Perez will visit the Universidad Científica del Sur (Peru). Her project focuses on fostering Peruvian-Uruguayan collaboration in Antarctic research through paleoenvironmental and paleoceanographic reconstructions, while advancing studies on Antarctic climate history and its connections to South America.

Dr Stephen Jennings will visit the University of Otago (New Zealand). His research combines crystallographic and large-scale glaciological studies to understand Antarctic Ice Sheet behaviour, focusing on ice-flow dynamics and shear margins, with the goal of improving models, informing policy, and promoting international collaboration.

For 2024, SCAR received 21 applications for the Visiting Scholarship programme. The scheme supports scientists and academics more than five years post-PhD whose work aligns with SCAR’s research objectives. It provides an opportunity for short-term visits to other SCAR member countries for training or mentoring, promoting capacity building in both host and home countries while fostering long-term partnerships and advancing Antarctic research.

Details of the previous Visiting Scholars can be found on the SCAR Visiting Scholar webpages.

Applications for the 2025 Visiting Scholarships will open later this year.
