Faradina Merican is an algal taxonomist and ecologist. She is a senior lecturer at the School of Biological Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) where her work focuses on the diversity, ecology, and toxicity of Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) from diverse habitats including extreme environments such as the Antarctic. Her current work also involves understanding antibiotic resistance in polar microalgae. She is an active member of the Malaysian Antarctic Research Program and is the thematic editor for Cyanobacteria (and microalgae) in the Register of Antarctic Species.
