María Victoria Quiroga has a PhD in Biology from the University of Buenos Aires on the topic “Diversity and ecology of freshwater bacteria from sub-Antarctic wetlands”. She is a biologist with a background in aquatic microbial ecology, currently developing as assistant researcher at the Technological Institute of Chascomús (INTECH, UNSAM-CONICET). She participates in the Argentinian Antarctic Program as a Research Assistant within the framework of a Project (PI Dr Gabriela Mataloni) that aims at (1) laying out the base for an inventory and classification system of Antarctic wetlands, and (2) performing a characterization of their structure and biodiversity, taking ASPA No. 134 “Cierva Point” as a study case. Within this multidisciplinary team, Victoria studies the ecological processes shaping bacterial diversity in this ASPA.
Current research projects / interests:
- Characterization of Antarctic wetlands at multiple analysis scales as a tool for the conservation and management of protected areas.
- The ecological processes shaping bacterial diversity in Antarctic wetlands.
- Virioplankton from shallow lakes with contrasting food webs: a metagenomic approach.
