Oakes is a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Queensland within the Australian Research Council’s Special Research Initiative project ‘Securing Antarctica’s Environmental Future’. She is primarily an Antarctic marine ecologist, though has a more general interest in conservation of Antarctic ecosystems, and the role of policy in protection of the Antarctic environment.
Oakes completed her PhD in 2023 at the University of Queensland which was the first comprehensive risk assessment for marine invasive species to the nearshore environments of East Antarctica. She has completed a Bachelor of Science (2013), a Graduate Certificate in Information Technology (2014) and a Masters of Conservation Science (2015).
Current research projects:
- Conservation planning of nearshore marine environments
- Marine invasive species
- Antarctic policy and governance
- Emerging environmental threats
Keywords: marine invasive species, systematic conservation planning, science-policy interactions, emerging technologies, ecosystem modelling
