Dr Gabriela Mataloni is a trained limnologist and phycologist. She graduated from the University of Buenos Aires and presently is a Principal Researcher in Environmental Sciences with a strong interest in the diversity and ecology of terrestrial (soil, snow and freshwater) microbial communities, particularly microalgae. She studied the diversity and ecology of such communities from Tierra del Fuego peat bogs and Maritime Antarctica, wherein she conducted 11 field seasons. Her present main research line focuses on the use of planktonic and/or microbial communities as indicators of environmental baseline conditions and changes in freshwater wetlands from Patagonia and Antarctica. She is Associate Editor of Polar Biology.
Current research projects / interests:
- Characterization of Antarctic wetlands at multiple scale analysis as a tool for the conservation and management of protected areas. Project Director.
- Anthropogenic effects on the wetlands of the Reconquista River basin: Integral environmental diagnosis, development of remediation processes and protocols for territorial management. Theme leader.
