During the Glacier Science Week at EXPO 2017 in Astana, Kazakhstan, version 2.0 of the wgms Glacier App from the World Glacier Monitoring Service (WGMS) was officially launched.
The new version includes information on glacier special events such as reported floods, avalanches, or surge and calving dynamics. It allows the users to submit their glacier photographs, and it gives improved visibility of principal investigators and latest publications related to glacier observations. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) and other filter options allow searching for more than 8,500 glaciers.
Well-established features such as the satellite map interface, the compass showing the closest glaciers with observations, and the card game are still included.
The wgms Glacier App was jointly developed by the WGMS and Ubique within the Capacity Building and Twinning for Climate Observing Systems, a project by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation and coordinated by the Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology MeteoSwiss. The wgms Glacier App is available at no costs from Apple App Store and Google Play Store. Thanks to the support from numerous colleagues, version 2.0 comes in English, German, French, Italian, Spanish and Russian.
