Dear Colleagues,
We are now on the cusp of Polar2018. The meeting has more than 2000 registered participants and an exceptionally wide range of sub-meetings and sessions.
Polar2018 offers an exceptional array of opportunities to scientists, those who support science, policymakers and other interested parties. Our attendees come from around the world, across the full range of disciplines, and from many different roles and perspectives.
On its 60th Anniversary, SCAR is especially pleased to be able to participate in a meeting that considers the Antarctic, Arctic and the mountain regions of the world including the third pole.
To celebrate our 60 years of Science and Science Facilitation, SCAR will hold two events.
On Monday 18th June 2018 (18h30) we will hold a formal celebration open to everyone at which we will serve drinks and snacks and hear briefly from past and present SCAR members. The event offers an opportunity to share your experiences, meet with old friends and make new ones, and get to know something about SCAR’s extraordinary history. As part of the anniversary we will be releasing an updated and revised version of Science in the Snow. The event is open to all.
On Wednesday 20th June 2018 (18h30) we will hold a special Q&A panel event on Polar Change and the Future of Society, accompanied by drinks and snacks. Panel Members include Jane Francis (BAS) Marcelo Leppe (INACH), Tim Naish (Vic University Wellington), Steve Rintoul (CSIRO, ACE CRC), Jane Rumble (FCO UK), Andrew Shepherd (Leeds), Jan Strugnell (James Cook), Michael White (Nature). The event is co-sponsored by Nature and Nature Communications and will be attended by representatives from the journals. Space is limited for this event so please email [email protected] to receive an invitation. The event will run for 90 minutes.
Of course, the formal meeting sessions will provide an opportunity to hear about exciting new science and to develop new collaborations. The exceptional venue and program also means the chance to explore research findings from many different fields.
During the course of the meeting, take the opportunity to meet with those deeply involved in SCAR and understand the many benefits it brings. Our Delegates, Chief Officers and Secretariat staff, including our new Executive Director Dr Chandrika Nath, will be present throughout. If you don’t know us, www.scar.org provides a guide to who we are. SCAR really is there for the community – for you.
I wish you all safe and speedy travels, and look forward to seeing you.
