Call for Secretary to join EDI Action Group


Dear SCAR EDI Action Group community members,

We are recruiting a Secretary to join the SCAR Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Action Group (AG).

This role will be an opportunity for early-career researchers, particularly students and those new to SCAR, to gain experience in project management, expand their network, familiarize themselves with SCAR and SCAR groups, as well as contribute to the activities of the EDI AG.

The Secretary will work with the EDI AG leadership to:

  1. Plan, and participate in core leadership (Chief Officer, Deputy Chief Officer, and Coordinator) meetings, which take place every two weeks;
  2. Plan, and participate in Leadership Steering Group (LSG) meetings, which take place 5 – 6 times a year. In particular, scheduling and creating agendas for LSG meetings, sending out reminders about the meeting to the LSG, and taking and sharing meeting minutes;
  3. Provide administrative support to the EDI AG leadership in their activities, by e.g. drafting communications to the EDI AG community and reporting to SCAR;
  4. Any other responsibilities that align with the Secretary’s area of expertise or broader interests where these intersect with the EDI AG’s mission and goals.

The role of Secretary is a volunteer position, requiring 1 – 2 hours of time dedicated per week, with some weeks requiring more, some less. The position will be for 2 years, with an option to renew for an additional 2 years at the end of the first 2-year term.

All early-career researchers (<5 years post-PhD) are welcome to apply. We will give preference towards:

  1. Postgraduate students;
  2. Applicants with little or no previous experience with SCAR, provided that they have the willingness and appetite to learn about SCAR, its programs and subsidiary bodies, and governance structures;
  3. Applicants who have experience or demonstrated interest in EDI;
  4. Applicants from countries with developing Antarctic programs (e.g., SCAR Associate Member countries);
  5. Applicants from developing economies or economies in transition (according to the UN definition, countries listed in tables B and C); and
  6. Applicants who are underrepresented in the Antarctic research community with respect to their gender, race, or sexuality.
