I am a marine biologist interested in Marine Antarctic ecosystems. I’m a researcher at the Instituto Antartico Chileno (INACH) and also PI at the Millennium Institute Biodiversity of Antarctic and subantarctic ecosystems (BASE). My research is focused on Antarctic benthic ecology, with special attention on the effect of warming on benthic communities, by using methods of traditional ecology and ‘omics. In addition, my research also focuses on conservation of Antarctic marine living recourses.

I am the Chilean representative at SC-CAMLR and currently I am the convener of the CCAMLR Working Group on Ecosystem Monitoring and Management (WG-EMM). I have been involved in the development of the proposal to establish a Marine Protected Area in CCAMLR Domain 1. As part of the Scientific Department at the Chilean Antarctic Institute, I have participated in activities related to SCAR and SOOS. I have been involved working with researchers from several other countries, including New Zealand, Australia, Argentina, Brazil, UK, US, Sweden, Denmark and Norway, developing science and also looking for opportunities to develop cooperative research between Chilean scientists with scientists from other countries developing research in the Antarctic Peninsula.

Current research projects / interests:

  • Marine ecology,
  • Conservation,
  • Domain 1 Marine Protected Area Proposal (D1MPA),
  • Millennium Institute Biodiversity of Antarctic and subantarctic ecosystems (BASE)
