5th Snow Science Winter School
From Sunday 17 February 2019
To Saturday 23 February 2019
Hits : 4934

Over the past 10 years, snow science has seen a rapid change from a semi-quantitative to a quantitative science. Understanding physical and chemical processes in the snowpack requires detailed measurements of the microstructure. The 5th Snow Science Winter School will teach these advanced techniques, such as micro-tomography, measurement of specific surface area by reflection and spectroscopy, near-infrared photography and high-resolution penetrometry. You will learn:

  • State-of-the-art snow measurement techniques especially on sea ice
  • Understanding the physical processes responsible for the evolution of the snowpack
  • Understanding snow - sea ice interactions and modeling

The course also includes lectures on physical processes of the snowpack, snow modeling and remote sensing. This year, the focus is on snow on sea ice. The location is a small island on the Gulf of Bothnia with easy access to sea ice.

Graduate students and post-docs working in any snow-related field are welcome to apply.  The course fee is 350 euros (includes accommodation and meals).

For more information and a link to the application form, visit the 5th Snow School website.

Deadline for applications is 6 November 2018.

The course is organised by the WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research SLF and the Finnish Meteorological Institute.

Location Hailuoto, Finland
