SCAR Operations and the COVID-19 Situation – March 2020 Briefing Note 3

Monday, March 16th, 2020

A message from SCAR President Steven L. Chown:

Dear Colleagues

Please note that the SCAR Secretariat at the Scott Polar Research Institute in Cambridge, UK will be closed from 18th March 2020 to 17th April 2020 in the first instance. The Secretariat Staff will be working from home.

The SCAR Secretariat’s operations will continue as per usual, except for any matters that were planned to be held at the Secretariat.

I will discuss the situation with the Executive Director, Chandrika Nath, on a weekly basis, and the SCAR Executive will review these arrangements in the week of the 10th of April 2020.

If you intended to visit the Secretariat between now and the end of May 2020, please put off these plans and discuss alternatives with the Executive Director.

Most of our business is already conducted electronically. But if you find you are experiencing any difficulty, please do not hesitate to contact Chandrika Nath or myself.

Thank you for your understanding. The decision to close the Secretariat has not been made lightly, but has been made given full consideration of the circumstances of our staff, the developing situation, and the need to ensure we secure SCAR’s business continuation and the health of our staff to the extent we are able.

Steven L Chown
SCAR President
