Korea Polar Research Institute will hold the 23rd International Symposium on Polar Sciences in Incheon, the Republic of Korea on May 17-18, 2017.

The International Symposium on Polar Sciences has been held once every year since the launch of our Antarctic research. This Symposium serves not only to bring polar scientists together, providing an international forum to exchange views and ideas, but also provides an opportunity to discuss collaborative research with colleagues.

Theme

Antarctic Horizon Scan identified, ‘learning how Antarctic life evolve and survived’ as one of the six most important research questions for the next 20 years and beyond. Polar genomics is also one of the research initiatives KOPRI recently selected to pursue. In this regard, the theme of the 23rd International Symposium on Polar Science is timely set; “Life at the extremes; resilience, adaptation and potential.” We cordially invite you to share your knowledge and understanding towards living organisms in the polar region.

Topics

We will discuss on the following six thematic topics of the current scientific achievements on Polar Life Science:
Topic I: Genomics and physiological studies of microorganisms living in extreme environments
Topic II: Adaptation of photosynthetic organisms to freezing environment
Topic III: Genomic and physiological adaptation in polar animals
Topic IV: Evolution: from fossils to genomics
Topic V: Marine food web: prey-predator
Topic VI: Cold-adapted proteins and metabolites: from molecular cloning to biotechnology

Side Meetings

Side meetings will be held to exchange ideas with experts of nations and/or NGOs before the 40th Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting (ATCM) on the following topic: Discussion of the Antarctic Treaty System (ATS) for the designation of Marine Protected Area (MPA) and conservation of marine living resources.
