Project: Imprints of the early glaciations on the George V Land continental shelf: insights for long-term evolution of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet

The inner shelf of George V Land (GVL) subsided as lithosphere flexure extended outwards during Oligocene glaciation and the coast experienced a progressive relative sea-level rise (Stocchi et al., 2013). Transgressive deposits accumulated on the shelf and archived crucial information of the early glaciations. The candidate aims to infer imprints of the past ice sheet dynamics on the GVL continental shelf from offshore seismic and sediment records, to improve the understanding of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet (EAIS) stability and sea level changes. Two main scientific issues will be addressed in this proposed work:

  • to improve knowledge of sub-glacial and ice proximal processes shaping the shelf geometry
across the Eocene to Miocene times.
  • to seek for the signature of glacial inception across main Eocene to Miocene thresholds, and reconstruct the paleo-shelf of the GVL at the Eocene-Oligocene boundary (34 Ma) .
